What is Radical Autonomy? ( ..... it’s not yoga ..... )
What stories are held in our bodies?
This is an invitation to reclaim your body and your narrative through somatic awareness
How do the body, mind, voice, emotion, and spirit respond
to an activated awareness of our experiences?
Are the stories that circle our experience truly ours,
or have they been put upon us,
or something else?
May we embrace identity and identifiers as being parts of us while not defining us?
workshop / practice / laboratory
I invite you into a somatic laboratory of body based practice with the intention for radical autonomy of body, mind, voice, emotion, spirit…. This is your practice, mine, and ours collectively. We declare a nurturing space for individuals and communities to practice - individually, while in community - in public spaces. I invite you to accept, reclaim, reject, embrace, rewrite, celebrate, release - and any other response you choose - to the stories and narratives, and anything else that might arise.
I will guide you through various somatic laboratories including an introduction to personal anatomy, developmental movement, body system awareness, (ie~tapping into the intelligence of the physical body), developing strength and range of movement with low impact, encouraging movement from impulse and sensation, discovering one’s deeper voice, and declaring a manifesto for creating one's personal daily practice.
Questions, to book a group workshop, a public presentation, a private session

Choreography, Performing Artist, Teacher
I participated in Reese Johanson’s Radical Autonomy laboratory. My background is in classical and modern dance and I have been a performer and choreographer for most of my life. I’m now in my 50’s, and have backed off of performing some due to the wear and tear, and feel physically restrained from the work I would normally do.
Through simple instructions of how to explore our anatomy, and finding movement organically, I found a new way to express my stories. The process was very zen and I found my self expression as somewhat primal and I could’ve stayed in those spaces for hours. The process was a combination of autonomy therapy and physical theatre. This work is suitable for anyone who is open to exploring what their body and mind may need for healing or a new way of creating movement for performance art.
Professor of Biology and Anatomy
When I was approached about participating in an experimental somatic group, it was the ideal time to do so. My husband had just died in front of me unexpectedly from the flu over the winter holidays, leaving me and our young son traumatized and unmoored. Compounding our trauma, when we were the most vulnerable, my estranged father came to “help” and it was quickly apparent he was unwilling or unable to do so.
I had managed to secure leave from my job, so when I was asked to participate, not only was I very interested but actually had an open schedule. In the beginning I had several tearful moments that were far from sad. It seemed like I’d finally stumbled into something that spoke to me.
It became obvious that everything I did, down to my unconscious movements, was shaped by the experiences I had. Unlike cognitive therapy, the practice did not feel like work; it felt natural and intuitive. As we opened up and shared as a group, I felt like this is something that I needed in my life.
My only complaint is that it ended far too soon but now I am able to seek it out on my own as this is now my personal practice

Reese Johanson‘s Radical Autonomy class is wonderful. It creates an incredible space in my day and in my life to check in deeply with my body, my cells, my bones and many other parts. She encourages us to to breathe into each part so they can all heal and grow and be appreciated.
The balance between physical movement; scientific, personal and collective learning; and dialogue about the stories we hold in our bodies strikes just the right balance.
And it’s fun!
